Title : Comparative Study on the Effect of Fucoidan and Levamisole on Some Selective Biochemical and Hematological Parameters in Heat Stress Rabbits
Authors Mohamed El- Sayed El-Boshy, Nany Nasr El-Deean
Abstract: This study was planned to investigate the effect of fucoidan and levamisole on some hematological and biochemical parameters in growing rabbits, in both normal and heat stress conditions. One month aged rabbits were orally treated with fucoidan at a dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight daily for 4 weeks and levamisole with 8 mg/kg as a single dose every 2 weeks. This study was conducted at winter and summer. Fucoidan and levamisole treated groups returned the increased RBCs count and stress leukogram picture to normal at the end of the study. Also, biochemical profile in fucoidan treated groups, showed significant decrease in ALT, AST, urea and creatinine with increased level of total protein and globulin when compared with heat stress group. We concluded that fucoidan express good immunomodulating, hepatoprotective and renoprotective effect against stress induced by high temperature.

Title : Role of TNF alpha in schistosoma mansoni infection and cirrhotic liver
Authors Manar Ezzelarab Ramadan, Mohamed Ezz Elarab Ramadan, Mervat Shafik Mohamed Yousef
Abstract: Hepatitis C is a wide spread viral disease that is the most common cause of cirrhotic liver. Schistosomiasis has been the most important public health problem in Egypt .Periportal fibrosis (PPF) of liver is due to deposition of collagen and is called pipestem .Cirrhosis is a diffuse process of fibrosis . TNF α is a proinflammatory cytokine tumour has emerged as a key factor in various aspects of liver disease The goal of this study to assess the levels of serum TNF alpha in patients with schistosomiasis mansoni and patients with hepatic cirrhosis due to virus C infection and their role in the process of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis .A cross sectional descriptive study carried out in outpatient clinic, Ahmed Maher Teaching hospital,Hepatology Department, Egypt. This study was performed on 30 subjects:10 schistosomal and 10 cirrhotic, compared to 10 control subjects; apparently healthy, parasite free. The following laboratory investigations were done; parasitological investigations include stool analysis by simple sedimentation method and kato-katz technique, routine liver enzymes and serum TNF-α by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Detection of hepatic virus C +ve patients was confirmed via +ve anti HCV antibodies (Abs)(ELISA), and negative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs Ag).Abdominal sonar was done to diagnose liver cirrhosis and detect degree of PPF.In schistosomiasis mansoni and cirrhotic group, serum levels of TNF-α were significantly higher than those of control group (P<0.05) and Significantly Increase the risk of developing advanced Periportal Fibrosis (95% CI 1.01 to 2.54, P = 0.048). These results suggest that TNF alpha may be considered as a marker for morbidity in Hepatitis +ve virus C infection, whereas in schistosomal patients, considered as a marker for degree of periportal fibrosis.

Title : Nasal Septal Perforations - An Occupational Hazard in Chrome Industry Workers
Authors Sulabha M Naik, Mahendra S Naik
Abstract: Persons working in nickel refineries, arsenic smelters and chrome plating factories are exposed to chromium compounds. Hexavalent chromium has been implicated for its toxic effects on the nasal mucosa. Detailed data of 108 workers, dealing in manufacturing of Chrome and its compounds, was collected concerning age, occupational history and clinical examination. Of the 108 cases, 52 cases had nasal and conjunctival irritation and 19 patients suffered from anosmia. All the workers had perforations involving anterior and middle portion of cartilaginous septum. However, no destruction of bony septum was observed. The current study concludes that ENT surgeons must enquire about the occupation of the patient in cases of septal perforations.

Title : PREVALANCE OF RISK FACTORS FOR IHD IN DIABETIC AND NON-DIABETIC PATIENTS
Authors Khan A.M., Ali W., Mohsin J
Abstract: Background: Diabetes is a major risk factor for Ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality. There is a little information on how it contributes to the causation and how it accelerates the disease progression when combined with other associated risk factors (i.e. smoking, hypertension and sedentary lifestyle).
Objective: To observe and compare the prevalence of major risk factors for IHD among diabetics and non-diabetics.
Study Design: Descriptive, Cross sectional
Place and Duration: Outdoor department, Punjab Institute of Cardiology Lahore, May-June 2012
Methodology: Standardized pre-tested questionnaire was used
Results: Majority of the cases were in 40-60 years age group and male gander. Hypertension was more common in diabetics. While opposite was true for smoking.
Conclusion: Besides diabetes, other major risk factors such as hypertension, sedentary lifestyle and smoking can also independently lead to IHD.

Title : Study on the Quality of Semen of Different Genetic Groups of Bull from Khulna Region of Bangladesh
Authors Md. Shamim Akhter, Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Md. Zahidur Rahman and Ayesha Ashraf
Abstract: The research work was conducted in District Artificial Insemination (AI) Center, Daulatpur, Khulna and Animal Biotechnology Laboratory, Khulna University, Khulna from July, 2010 to January, 2012. Semen was collected from 3 genetic groups of bulls from the AI center. Five frozen semen ampoules (1/4 Local x3/4 Friesian) was also used in this experiment. After collection, semen was observed to evaluate its quality by volume, pH, sperm concentration, sperm motility (%), live spermatozoa (%) and normal spermatozoa (%). Data were analyzed using 'SPSS' computer program. The results from the study revealed that the effects of genetic groups on volume, live-dead and pH were non- significant (P>0.05). On the other hand, different genetic groups showed significant (P<0.01) effect on sperm motility, sperm concentration and normal spermatozoa

Title : A study on usefulness of Re-Orientation of Medical Education (ROME) posting in enhancing the research oriented knowledge among undergraduate medical students.
Authors Chauhan RC, Purty AJ, Singh Z
Abstract: Re/research orientation of medical education (ROME) has been practiced in many medical colleges for a long. However a few studies have assessed the change in knowledge and attitude of medical students after completion of ROME posting. Material and Methods: Students who undertook a ROME posting in Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences during 2013 were requested to complete a pre- and post-posting structured pretested questionnaire (n=102). The response rate for pre- and post-posting questionnaire was 93.2% (n=95) and 87.6% (n=89). 87 students completed both pre- and post-questionnaire and were included in the analysis. Results: Among the 87 students 64.4% (n=56) were girls. The change in knowledge of the medical students regarding research methodology was significant (p=0.001) and the study shows a positive attitude of medical students for providing community based primary health services in rural areas, especially in boys. Conclusions: ROME posting is able to impart a change in knowledge and attitude of medical students and as undergraduate curriculum should be implemented in all the medical colleges.
